Hildreth Meière’s “Prudential Plaza Mosaic: The Pillars of Herakles”

By Dylan B.

Herakles is a powerful Greek god; he is the son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene. He is known all throughout the world because he was such a strong mythological figure, especially for completing his 12 Labors which included slaying a hydra and a lion. In another case, Herakles even rescued a princess from a hungry sea-monster. In spite of these accomplishments, in the mosaic painting “The Pillars of Herakles” created by Hildreth Meière, she depicts Herakles as a small, insignificant human being. Herakles’ lonely sailboat adds to the feeling that he’s weak and lost his strength.
