The organization introduces a new name, a broader mission, and new leadership
SOUTH ORANGE, NEW JERSEY – Write on Sports, a nonprofit that helps under-resourced middle school students build literacy, confidence, and self-expression through writing, has rebranded as First Draft Academy. The organization also announced the appointment of Shannon M. Schmitt as its new Executive Director.
Why a Rebrand
Founded as a sports journalism program, over time, Write on Sports expanded beyond its original focus. What began as a sports-themed writing program grew to include Write on Arts and Media Lab, offering students opportunities to strengthen their writing skills, critical thinking, and self-confidence through project based-learning, digital storytelling, and multimedia projects.
As these programs grew, the organization recognized the need for a name that reflected the full scope of its work.
First Draft Academy now serves as the home for all theme-based programs, giving students the freedom to explore what interests them most.
“We needed a name that matched who we have become,” said Schmitt. “First Draft Academy allows us to continue meeting students where they are while creating new opportunities based on what inspires them.”
What the Name Represents
The phrase “First Draft” reflects the organization’s educational approach. Students are encouraged to try new things, take creative risks, and build confidence through practice. Learning, like writing, begins with a first draft.
New Leadership
Alongside the rebrand, the organization announced Schmitt’s appointment as Executive Director. Schmitt has been with the organization since 2013, supporting its growth through program development, community partnerships, and communications.
“I am honored to step into this role at such an important moment,” said Schmitt. “Our foundation and core has always been about meeting students where they are, building confidence, and providing meaningful learning experiences. That will remain at the center of everything we do.”
Looking Ahead
First Draft Academy will continue serving middle school students from communities with limited access to enrichment opportunities communities through hands-on programs in journalism, arts writing, and digital storytelling.
