First Draft Academy Executive Director Shannon Schmitt Featured on Hart & Hustle Podcast, Spotlighting the Power of Youth Literacy and Creative Confidence

Essex County, NJ – First Draft Academy is proud to announce that Executive Director Shannon Schmitt was featured on the nationally recognized Hart & Hustle Podcast, where she shared her personal journey, her South Jersey roots, and the organization’s mission to strengthen writing, critical thinking, and build confidence for middle school students.

Shannon Schmitt Shares Her Journey from Entertainment to Nonprofit Leadership

During the conversation, Ms.Schmitt reflected on her path from the entertainment industry to nonprofit leadership, describing how becoming a parent of identical twin boys reshaped her purpose and inspired her commitment to youth development. After nearly a decade working in New York City developing television, radio, theater, and film concepts, Ms. Schmitt sought a career that balanced creativity, impact, and family. That search led her to the literacy organization formerly known as Write on Sports, now First Draft Academy, where she has served since 2013.

“We’re a literacy enrichment organization focused on middle school kids,” Ms. Schmitt shared during the interview. “We’re really trying to bring them an opportunity to strengthen their writing skills, critical thinking, how to think outside the box, and tap into an interest.”

Empowering Middle School Students Through Writing, Critical Thinking, and Creative Confidence

Ms. Schmitt emphasized that middle school is a pivotal developmental stage, one where identity begins to form, and students need supportive spaces to explore their voice. First Draft Academy’s programs are designed to meet that moment, offering authentic learning experiences by tapping into students’ interests.  This approach helps them discover the power of their ideas and use their voice. With the increase of AI accessibility, First Draft Academy approaches AI as a tool while still promoting the importance of student’s integrity and credibility. “Authenticity is a priceless commodity,” stated Ms. Schmitt.

New Jersey Roots, Family Influence, and the Values Shaping First Draft Academy’s Culture

Her personal story also resonated with listeners. A proud “Jersey girl,” Ms.Schmitt spoke about the vibrancy of New Jersey communities and how her upbringing influences her leadership. She also shared how raising twins taught her the importance of fostering independence, individuality, and curiosity, values she now brings directly into First Draft Academy’s culture.

“Just because they came at the same time doesn’t mean it’s a BOGO for life,” she joked. “We wanted to give them space to explore, and that’s exactly what we want for our students, too.”

The Hart & Hustle episode highlights the organization’s growing impact across New Jersey and reinforces the critical role literacy plays in academic success, confidence building, and long‑term opportunity.
